John Gotti - The Boss

Not long ago, I came to read about a man. A Powerful Man in his generation. His name is John Gotti. He is the BIG MAFIA BOSS of the Gambino Crime Family, one of the Top Five Families in New York City. Gotti has Charisma. Even though he is a Gangster boss who murdered anyone who gets in his way, he is loved by the people, the public, his neighbourhood, the young gangsters, and of course The Press. When I first saw John Gotti on video, I immediately had a crush on him. He is so stylish. I liked the way he looks, the way he combs his greyish hair backwards, how he dressed and walks with an air around him. He is famously known as the 'Dapper Don' because of his flamboyant style, and also the 'Teflon Don' where he is known as The Untouchable. The law is unable to 'touched' him for 3 consecutive times in 4 years in very sticky lawsuits. People are afraid of him. I liked such character. Having the feeling that nobody dare to touched you is pretty awesome. It is very powerful and mighty. When it rains, John Gotti also had his right-hand man carry an umbrella for him as he walked. WOW. He definitely got the air of a BOSS.

Look at how Suave he is...

Here are some of his memorable quotes:

“I never lie because I don't fear anyone. You only lie when you're afraid.” - Gotti

“If you think your boss is stupid, remember: you wouldn't have a job if he was any smarter.” - Gotti

“He's getting personal, I want to get personal.” - Gotti

“He who is deaf, blind & silent, lives a thousand years in peace." - Gotti

“When I think of the American Indian I think of their courage, strength, pride, their respect and loyalty toward their brothers. I honor the reverence they share for tradition and life. These traits are hungered for in a society that is unfortunately plagued by those whose only values are self-centered and directed at others' expense." - Gotti

"I'm in the Gotti Family; My Wife's the Boss" - Gotti

I absolutely liked his quotes. And I agree with it. He is Fearless and gets Personal. In life, you do not lie. Because it shows you have fear. And fear is a weakness. Get personal with people if they want to get personal with you. Get even with them. Do not shrieked or run away from it. It shows that you are scared. This is especially true in business and war. Always be the Winner, not the loser. Though he may seems like a cold-blooded, merciless mobster boss, he sure knows what the society is lacking. He knows how to appreciate the good side of bad things. A Man of Wisdom.

A Solemn and Charming Man

Gotti is a ruthless man. He rise to the top because he ordered an assasination on his boss Paul Castellano especially when he realised that Castellano is unhappy that he is dealing with drug business. Gotti find his boss a threat to him. And on December 16, 1985, at 5:26pm, he ordered his top boss 'Big Paul' to be gunned down when he was getting off his car in front of Starks Steak House. As ruthless as he is, Gotti also ordered his new underboss Thomas Bilotti, second-in-command who served as a hinder to his rise, to be killed too. Such double murder staged in a public place shows that John Gotti have the audacity to finished anyone who gets into his road. He also want to make a bold statement to other mobsters, and discourage retaliation. To be successful, sometimes you have to be ruthless in order to rule the throne.

Gotti Does Not Have to Carry the Umbrella Himself

The New Boss

Soon after, John Gotti emerged as the BOSS of the new Gambino Crime Family. His impeccable appearance and thousand dollar tailor suits quickly earned him a media nickname 'The Dapper Don'. In John Gotti's first trial, he was accused of fellow assault of Romual Piecyk over a dispute. However, Piecyk suddenly changed his previous stance that Gotti beat him up and testifies that he does not remember who attack him. The case was dismissed. WHY? This was because Piecyk was threatened by Gotti. He received continuous harassing calls at all hours and his truck brakes were being tempered with. Gotti's witness intimidation worked well. This is more than enough warning to anyone. He is able to instill fear in people. That is a capability. And Gotti's fame rise from here. His press-friendly image starts to captures the attention of the public.

Looked Good in his 40s

Mobsters around Gotti's frequently disappeared, or turned out dead. One of it is Gambino soldier Robert DiBernardo who suddenly went missing in 1986. Gotti's 2nd trial takes place in Federal Court where he was accused of in connection with several crimes inlcuding racketeering and murder. Several low level mob turncoats were called on to confirmed Gotti's role in Gambino organisation and his ties to serious crimes. However, Gotti appear suspisciously calm when waiting for the jury to announced his fate. In the end, the jury announced Gotti NOT GUILTY on all counts. This is a setback to the prosecuters who thought that he would be convicted. Little did anybody knew that Gotti had his hands controlled the situation at the start. Everybody was fooled by the Cunning John Gotti. It was FIXED. One of the jurer was bribed. He reached out to the jury, offering his Not Guilty vote in exchange for $60,000. He gets the money, and Gotti got acquited. Gotti is very smart to escape this. Because the judge tried to prevent jury tampering by keeping the panel anonymous. And it is very surprising that Gotti is still able to counter that. He is definitely not ordinary. Everybody soon wants a piece of him. He turns from a folk hero to a charming mobster overnight that even the government can't convict. His Fame Rise Even Higher. Not Notorious, but Glamorously Famous. From then on, he earned a new nickname 'Teflon Don' for his ability to deflect criminal charges.

Gotti really Looked Like a Classic Traid Boss

In 1989, for the 3rd time, John Gotti was called up to court, this time by the State of New York. He was accused of ordering attack of an union boss named John O' Conner. The court play the recordings where Gotti was heard saying Conner's address, "John O' Conner. John O' Conner, 608, at 16 somethin' Broadway". But in another recording, Gotti's words was more difficult to discern. The state argues that Gotti is saying a code where he is going to bust them up. There is also a powerful witness which is the alleged victim himself, John O' Conner. However, the Union Boss takes the stance and says that he has NO IDEA who attacked him! In February 1990, the verdict is broadcast Live on TV where he is announced NOT GUILTY. For the 3rd time in 4 years, Gotti beat the rap and goes free. He run out of court and put his fist into the air to show victory to his crowd of fans and supporters who cheered loudly. Could you ever believe that a gangster boss would be so welcomed by the public?! Even I can't get enough of this man. He looks so suave, so handsome, so amicable, so stylish, so charismatic, so powerful yet untouchable. He just had that Star Factor. Seriously. Charisma is either you have it OR dont have it. John Gotti absolutely have that. And that is probably why I like him when I first saw his picture and video, and naturally grew a HUGE interest on him. And now I am even writing about him. He has become one of my 90s idol. He is a truely a Celebrity Hollywood-style mobster boss. I love him!

Mr. Untouchable

Then, 10 months after the Not Guilty verdict, Gotti was arrested once again. This time, his right hand man, Sammy Gravano was also arrested. Sammy 'The Bull' was faced with racketeering charges that include allegations of murder. This was known as the "Gangster Case of the Century". John Gotti bragged to the FBI that he will beat this one too. Gotti is Cocky. He is Confident. He is Unwavered. That is what I liked about him. In 1992, the court played the recordings. And this time, Gotti's words can be heard CLEARLY about him talking about Cosa Nostra, which means Mafia a criminal syndicate, "This is gonna be a Cosa Nostra till I die. Be it an hour from now, or be it tonight, or a hundred years from now when I'm in jail. It's gonna be a Cosa Nostra." There was even tapes that CLEARLY hear him saying that he beat up Di.B, "When Di B got whacked, I knew why it was being done. I whacked him." However, the strongest evidence against Gotti was the words of his right-hand man Sammy Gravano where he will divulge mob secrets to testify against his own boss in exchange for reduced sentence. He said Gotti was the mastermind of the murder of Paul Castellano. And in April 2 1992, John Gotti was found GUILTY on the crimes of racketeering and conspiracy on all counts. Sadly. And Angrily. One woman even claim that this was a rotton trial, an unfair trial. And it "is worse than Russia." I loved the loyalty that his neighbourhood and supporters have towards Gotti. He didn't live his life in vain. He is glorious in his days. And he will never be forgotton. So untouchable, yet so approachable to his neighbourhood people and the press. John Gotti will always be remembered as the Mr. Untouchable that even the government can't touch him for years.

This ended the mighty era for Cosa Nostra.

 "3-to-1 odds I beat this" - Gotti

This is the story of John Gotti, the biggest Mafia Boss of his era. Even if he was sentenced to life imprisonment, he was still as cocky as ever. He never regretted. He choose to live the life. The gangster life. The life of crime. John Gotti feels that he belongs to the street. He loved the code. He loved the action. He loved the Chase. He loved everything about being a gangster. He lived the life 24/7. Gotti knew it deep inside that by living such life, he would either be dead or go to jail. And Family to him was second. He was seldom at home. During his childhood days, Gotti was a bad boy. He often plays truancy in school and bullys other students. And eventually dropping out of school at the age of 16. But since 12, Gotti was already involved in street gangs. At age 14, he attempts to steal a cement mixer from a construction site when it fell and crushed his toes. Gotti hates school at a young age and devoted to working with the Mafia-associated Boys Gang where he befriended fellow and future Gambino mobsters.

He met his wife in 1958. He had tried to work in legitimate jobs in a coat factory and as a truck driver. However, he could not seem to stay away from crime. Throughout his youth, he commit crimes such as hijacking a truck and killing, where he would get caught and jailed again. If you stand in Gotti's mindset, you will find that he does not care about the consequences at all. He is bold and daring. He is prepared to lived this life as it is.  He enjoy every moment of it. Everything. He continues to be a gangster after being in jail twice. He was initiated into the Gambino family after his 2nd release. Where he would ultimately be the successor of the Most Powerful American Mafia Family, the Gambino.

Gotti is successful in his reign. His empire earned an annual income of millions. Though a ruthless killer, he has a heart. Behind every fierce man, there is always a soft side. This is true. John did charitable contributions to local churches and to small children. Gotti also cared about his family and treated everyone in his neighbourhood with respect, and they respected him. "To the kids, to everyone, he is a local hero," says one neighbour. "People have more trouble parking than they do with Gotti." The neighbourhoods would hold parties with fireworks to celebrate his successful trials.

The Boss Always Walks in Front

Gotti does not care about money. He would say, "If a guy was saving money, I would put money away." He was a street guy. At the end of the day, he would be going to jail. What is he going to do with all that money, he says. John Gotti has a temper. A volcanic one, says John Gotti Jr. He shows it towards his children, his grandchildren and his wife. He had a stormy marriage with his wife, Victoria where they are constantly arguing and fighting. In fact, Gotti showed his temper to anybody who provoke him.

Charismatic and Full of Charm

Lastly, being a gangster will never come to a good end. It is either you die on the streets or end up in jail. And John Gotti, the onced mighty untouchable mobster boss died of throat cancer in year 2002, after 10 years in jail. I loved John Gotti. I feel that he is a legendary crime boss. He successfully fight against the law for 3 successive times. He is respected by the neighbours, loved by the women and men, especially the youngsters who see him as a HERO who will always be. Crime falls in the neighbourhood because of him. However, because of his cockiness, he loves to talk about his crime activities. He is careless. He knows that the FBI is recording whatever he says, but he is too proud, too flamboyant and very outspoken that eventually led to his downfall. Nevertheless, John Gotti led his life to the fullest, he do what he likes best. He became the most powerful boss of the crime family in the 80s, where he managed his multi million dollar crime  business and leaving a trial of dead bodies along his way. An undisputable fact, he was a celebrity well-liked by the 2Ps. The People and The Press. A powerful and charismatic character indeed.
